operate in two general ways. First your home office PC
can serve as the telephone. This version requires
software be loaded on to your home office PC and a
headset or specialized phone be attached to the PC. The
second version of the broadband
telephone requires an adapter box that connects
usually between your high-speed internet modem (DSL or
cable) and your home office network or home computer.

Can take advantage
of existing phone equipment.
Support for adaptor
and programming is controlled by the vendor.
Disadvantages of Adapter Based VoIP
Does not integrate
with software on your computer.
Requires additional
physical space and power connections.
Control and
reporting can be more limited.
